Bedside Crib and Travel Cot

Bedside cribs are a bassinet-style cot that fixes to the bed's side. Some have an end that can be raised for easy access, while others come with an incline that is ideal for babies with reflux.

MFM test subject Georgina found this crib to be easy to build and the instructions were clear, making it a quick and easy build. It also folds down to the size of a small bedside cot bag and comes with a convenient bag for traveling.

Easy to assemble

Bedside cribs are generally easy to put together, and are on the smaller side to fit neatly alongside your bed. They are also lighter, making them more portable. Georgina, one of our MFM home test participants, praised the Maxi-Cosi for being "super easy to put together with clear instructions and simple zips." The crib can also be used as a travel cot, and comes with a handy bag for when you're on the move. It features multiple mesh windows for breathability and the adjustable height makes it can fit on any mattress.

Some bedside cribs feature an additional side panel that can be adjusted to let you easily access your baby without having to get out of the bed. This is a great option for mothers who are breastfeeding, or those who want to be close to their baby throughout the night, but don't want to risk co-sleeping (which is linked to an increased risk of SIDS).

The majority of models have a built-in rocking function. This can be very relaxing for your baby and can help them sleep. Some cribs offer a recline position that can be beneficial if your baby suffers from reflux or colic. These should only be used under supervision. A health professional or a GP should be consulted prior to trying this position.

There's also an integrated set-up for reflux and an swivel that can be 360 degrees to allow you to rotate the crib according to your baby's preferred position.

If you're looking for something smaller in size the Tutti Bambini CoZee is a stylish option with oak legs and stylish fabrics to fit your decor. It's also easy to put together. Georgina who took part in the MFM test was able to put it together in a matter of minutes without having to look up any instructions. It's also a fantastic travel cot. It folds flat and can be easily stuffed into bags.

The Next2me Magic, shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, has a larger capacity, but it is small and simple to attach to your bed. Georgina found it easy to put together, though she did feel the zips could have been more clearly explained on the instruction manual.

Easy to clean

When you're looking at travel cots and bedside cribs make sure they have a removable mattress cover which can be washed in the machine. That will help you keep it free of leaky nappies, infant sick and dribbles. You should also choose a model that is easily disassembled to allow you to clean and sanitise every nook and cranny.

This is vital, as it's the best way to ensure that all germs and dirt have been removed. Check that the sides of the crib are securely secured to ensure that your baby doesn't fall down or get trapped.

Aside from being easy to clean, you'll want a bedside crib that is comfortable for your child and will fit comfortably into your own bed. This is especially important if you're using a bedside crib to facilitate co-sleeping. They are designed to be attached securely to the side of the parent's bed which allows parents to easily access their baby throughout the night to feed or comfort their child while maintaining the safety of separate sleeping surfaces.

Mattresses that are used are more likely to losing their shape with time which increases the risk of SIDS. All cribs that are new should be compliant with BS EN 1130:2019, the latest standard that imposes stricter requirements for secure and efficient sleep solutions.

Multi-faceted

The bedside crib, also known as a co-sleeping bed as it's sometimes called it is attached to the bed so that you can reach your baby easily at night without having to leave your sleeping space. They can also be used as a standalone crib during the daytime. They usually have a side panel that can be lowered, so you can feel and see your baby. Some cribs allow you to keep the panel in place all night, which gives you the closeness and convenience of sleeping in a bed with your newborn however it reduces the risk of bed-sharing. Some cribs can also be converted into a travel bedside crib cot or have extra features like rocking, tilting (use with caution, remember to speak to your GP about this) or even turning into an older baby cot or playpen.
