There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our first option. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people well during our tests. It also doesn't have a camera to see around corners.

It's still a good deal particularly if your home or office has a lot of unfinished floors and you're looking to save some money. Additionally, it's quiet and you can use it when you're at work or going to school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature that we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the competitors. It is one of our most appealing looking robot vacuum cleaners uk vacuums. The newest model from iRobot is among the most intelligent and has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum to score 100% in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and boasts an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you attempt to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, though it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are similarly capable and look better. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and a little more cost it's a capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs the top of the line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than some of its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its automatic vacuum cleaner has a high suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the house depending on how dirty those areas are.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean one particular area of your home using the app or voice controls. If you have furniture, a stair-mode is also a good option. Finally, a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than the price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate a mapping run which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms to ensure better performance. The app also grants access to a variety of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It is equipped with an impressive 8,000 Pascal suction as well as sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. You can also set up a spot clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.
