Path of Exile Item Upgrading

The most effective way to improve your equipment in Path of Exile is through upgrading your items. This allows you to enhance your gear without having to rely on expensive drops or trades. This article will teach you how to upgrade your items.

Upgrades to equipment provide an additional bonus to the item's base stats. This bonus scales according to the rarity and quality of the upgrade component.

Components

Upgrade components make your armour and weapons better. They can be obtained by fighting off enemies, locating them in spheres of items or purchasing them from karma sellers. They can also be rescued from equipment with them, or through a high-tier salvage kit like the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components are not destroyed by removing them from an item.

The primary function of upgrade components is to enable an item to be upgraded however, they also serve other purposes. They can be used to increase the level of an upgradeable item upgrade or they can be used to increase the experience gained when upgrading an existing weapon or piece of equipment. They can also be made to provide extra bonuses. For instance, a crafted glyph will boost the chances of upgrading its target, whereas a boost upgrade will enhance the defense or attack property of a weapon, or armor.

Selecting an upgrade template in the GUI will let you bind it to an item. This will display a list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. Each component has a distinct experience multiplier that affects how much more experience an item gets when it upgrades with that component.
